FACTS — Depression Can Fluctuate
“Symptoms of depression can fluctuate.”
Depression does not necessarily affect someone in exactly the same way every day. A person may manage their work well on one day and find the same tasks considerably harder on another.
Changes can affect:
- Concentration and attention
- Memory and information processing
- Energy and physical stamina
- Motivation and task initiation
- Communication
- Decision-making
- Emotional regulation
- Social interaction
- Confidence
- Ability to manage pressure or unexpected change
A good day doesn't mean the difficulty has disappeared
Someone being productive, sociable or appearing well does not necessarily mean their depression has resolved.
Likewise, fluctuating performance does not automatically mean someone is inconsistent, unreliable or not trying.
Look at patterns, not isolated days
Managers can help by creating space for an employee to communicate when things are becoming more difficult and by recognising that support may need to increase or decrease depending on the person's needs at that time.
Flexible approaches might include adjusted workloads, clearer priorities, additional breaks, quieter working arrangements or temporary changes to deadlines.
Support can be flexible too — it doesn't have to wait until someone reaches crisis point.
