FACTS — Workplace Environment & Neurodivergence
“Workplace environments can affect neurodivergent employees differently.”
Noise, lighting, interruptions, temperature, crowded spaces and unpredictable environments can influence concentration, comfort, communication and sensory regulation.
For some neurodivergent people, everyday workplace experiences can feel much more intense. This might include:
- Fluorescent or very bright lighting
- Background conversations, phones or machinery
- Strong smells from food, perfume or cleaning products
- Busy open-plan offices
- Frequent interruptions or unexpected demands
- Uncomfortable temperatures or clothing requirements
- Hot-desking or regularly changing workspaces
- Meetings without clear agendas
- Sudden changes to routines or schedules
Sensory overload can affect performance
When the brain is using significant energy trying to process the environment, there may be less capacity available for concentrating, communicating, remembering information or completing tasks.
Someone may appear distracted, withdrawn, irritable or overwhelmed when they are actually experiencing sensory or cognitive overload.
Small adjustments can make a big difference
Helpful workplace adjustments might include noise-cancelling headphones, quieter working areas, softer lighting, predictable routines, written instructions, regular breaks, flexible working, a permanent desk or advance warning of changes.
Adjustments aren't about giving someone an advantage. They can help remove unnecessary barriers so the person can use their skills and do their job effectively.
Sometimes it isn't the person's ability that needs to change — it is the environment around them that needs to become more accessible.
