Calcium and vitamin D work together

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium effectively, which is why the two nutrients are often discussed together.

Bone health is influenced by more than one nutrient, however. Protein, physical activity, hormones, age and overall nutrition can all play a part.

When eating is restricted

People with ARFID, sensory differences, food allergies, intolerances or a very limited range of safe foods may find it more difficult to obtain calcium from a wide variety of sources.

Rather than removing safe foods or forcing unfamiliar ones, it can be helpful to look at what is already manageable and identify small additions, fortified alternatives or appropriate professional support where needed.

Supplements aren't automatically necessary for everyone, and taking more calcium than the body needs isn't always better. If there are concerns about calcium intake or bone health, particularly with a significantly restricted diet, discussing this with a GP or registered dietitian can help.

Supporting nutrition isn't about achieving a perfect diet. It's about finding safe, realistic and sustainable ways to meet the body's needs.
