Notice the Pattern: When Do I Forget to Eat?
Sometimes forgetting to eat isn’t about not wanting food. Eating can simply disappear from awareness when your attention, energy or capacity is being used elsewhere.
This can be particularly common when someone is busy, deeply focused, stressed, overwhelmed, neurodivergent, experiencing reduced interoception, or struggling with executive functioning.
For a few days, notice when meals or snacks get missed or delayed.
What was happening?
- Was I busy or rushing?
- Was I hyperfocused on something?
- Had my usual routine changed?
- Was I overwhelmed or stressed?
- Did I actually notice hunger?
- Did I notice hunger but struggle to stop what I was doing?
- Did preparing food feel like too many steps?
- Was I tired or low in energy?
- Was choosing what to eat difficult?
- Were sensory issues affecting what felt manageable?
- Was food available and easy to access?
- Was I waiting until I felt “hungry enough”?
What happened afterwards?
Notice what your body or mind did later. You might experience low energy, headache, irritability, shakiness, difficulty concentrating, feeling suddenly very hungry, nausea, dizziness or becoming overwhelmed by choosing food.
You may also notice very little. Not everyone receives strong or obvious hunger signals.
Look for the point where eating becomes difficult
Ask yourself:
Is remembering the difficulty — or is starting the task the difficulty?
You may remember you need food but struggle with stopping an activity, deciding what to eat, preparing it, tolerating the sensory experience or transitioning into eating.
That distinction can help identify what kind of support might actually be useful.
What could make eating easier?
Rather than relying only on hunger to remind you, consider what supports you: visible snacks, regular prompts, predictable eating opportunities, easy-access foods, eating alongside someone, prepared options, or keeping familiar foods available.
The aim isn't to force yourself into somebody else's routine.
Notice when eating disappears from your radar, what was happening around it, and what helps bring it back into reach.
