Food, Emotions & Comfort — How to Use This Worksheet

Food can be connected with comfort, memories, relationships, celebration, stress and emotion.

This worksheet isn't about stopping emotional eating or judging yourself for seeking comfort from food.

Instead, use it to explore what happens for you.

Notice which emotions affect your appetite and when you might seek food for comfort.

Ask yourself what food provides in those moments. It might offer pleasure, predictability, distraction, soothing, connection or familiarity.

Also consider whether stress sometimes has the opposite effect and makes eating harder.

The worksheet then invites you to identify other forms of comfort that work for you.

These don't have to replace food. Food and another coping strategy can exist together.

Finish by considering what a compassionate response to yourself might sound like when emotions are high.
