When Your Mind Won’t Switch Off: A Personal Reflection on Sleep
Sleep is something I have learned not to take for granted.
When you have a busy brain, switching off isn't always as simple as getting into bed and closing your eyes. Your body might be exhausted while your mind is still going through conversations, ideas, things you need to remember and everything you didn't quite finish today.
I've learned that rest doesn't have to be earned.
For a long time, it can be easy to see slowing down as doing nothing, particularly when you are used to being busy, helping others or constantly moving on to the next thing.
But our brains and bodies need recovery.
Sometimes supporting sleep isn't about finding the perfect routine. It is about noticing what your own body needs — less stimulation, a quieter environment, movement during the day, a familiar routine, or simply permission to stop.
And if tonight isn't a perfect night's sleep, that's okay too. Tomorrow doesn't have to begin with criticism about what you "should" have done.
Be curious about what helps you rest, rather than judging yourself for finding sleep difficult.
Until next time, give yourself space to breathe — and permission to rest.
With love,
Maggie
