THE RETURN-TO-WORK CONVERSATION
A Guide for the Employee and the Manager

A return-to-work conversation should create clarity — not feel like another test somebody has to pass.

This Workplace Wellbeing resource is written for both sides of the conversation.

The three-page downloadable guide helps employees think about what they actually need their manager to understand, while helping managers focus on the practical information required to support a sustainable return rather than asking for unnecessary private details.

It covers workload and priorities, hours and duties, possible adjustments, privacy, colleagues' questions, early warning signs and agreeing what should happen if the return begins to feel too much.

There are practical questions managers can ask and examples of ways employees might explain their needs when finding the words feels difficult.

The guide also stresses the importance of reviewing the plan. A return-to-work agreement should be adjustable as somebody discovers what their current capacity actually looks like.

Managers do not have to become therapists. Employees do not have to disclose everything.

The aim is to create enough shared understanding for somebody to return with dignity and a realistic chance of staying well.
