WHEN EMAILS FEEL OVERWHELMING
Unread Messages, Avoidance, Executive Functioning and Shame

An inbox can look like a simple list of messages. For an overwhelmed brain, it can feel like hundreds of unfinished decisions.

This Workplace Wellbeing resource explores why emails can become so difficult to approach — particularly when ADHD, autism, executive-function difficulties, anxiety, perfectionism or previous criticism are part of the picture.

The three-page downloadable guide looks at what is actually involved in answering email: prioritising, remembering context, deciding what action is needed, finding information, task switching and choosing the right words.

It also explores the cycle of avoidance and shame. The longer a message waits, the harder it can feel to answer, until a two-minute reply has acquired days of emotional weight.

Practical ideas include separating reading from solving, using smaller starting points, simplifying overdue replies, reducing unnecessary notifications and creating clearer expectations about what genuinely requires an immediate response.

Importantly, the guide also asks whether email overload is really an individual organisation problem — or whether the volume and structure of workplace communication need to change.

An unread number is information. It is not a measurement of somebody's worth, professionalism or commitment.
