Eating Disorder Recovery Reading List

I have put this eating-disorder recovery reading list together because sometimes a book can give us language for something we have struggled to explain, help us feel less alone, or offer a practical idea that we can take back into therapy or recovery.

The list includes books for general eating-disorder recovery, anorexia, bulimia and binge eating, ARFID, body image and relationship with food, as well as books specifically for parents, carers and people supporting somebody they love. I have drawn particularly on books recommended by Beat and NHS eating-disorder services.

I do want to add an important note: a book is support, not treatment. No book knows your individual medical needs, nutritional requirements, diagnosis, sensory profile or stage of recovery. Some self-help approaches are more appropriate for particular eating disorders or particular stages of recovery, so if you are unsure, discuss the book with your treatment team.

You also do not need to read every book on this list. Recovery is not a reading challenge. Choose the book that meets the need you have today. You may want practical exercises, lived experience, help understanding the eating-disorder voice, support around binge eating, information about ARFID, or guidance because you are caring for somebody else.

I have included a reflection page in the PDF with questions you can use as you read: What did I recognise? What made me feel understood? Was anything triggering? What would I like to discuss with somebody supporting me? What do I want recovery to make more room for in my life?

My message to you is to take what helps and leave what does not. You are not required to agree with every author or complete every chapter. The books are here to support your life - your life is not here to complete the books.

Warmly, Maggie
