Did You Know? Eating Disorders Can Affect Your Bones

Eating disorders can affect far more than food, eating and body image. The brain needs a consistent supply of energy and nutrients, and when the body is under prolonged physical and psychological strain, the way someone thinks, concentrates, remembers and manages emotions can also be affected.

This downloadable Did You Know? fact sheet explores brain fog, concentration and memory difficulties, food preoccupation, changes in mood and emotional regulation, rigid thinking and decision-making. It also explains why some eating-disorder thoughts and behaviours can become increasingly difficult to challenge as the illness becomes more established.

Importantly, the resource also looks at recovery. Restoring adequate nutrition can provide an important physical foundation for the brain, while psychological treatment can help someone work with the fears, rules, beliefs and behaviours that may remain.

Recovery is about much more than a number on the scales. Being able to think more clearly, reconnect with interests, make decisions more freely and have more mental space away from the eating disorder can all be meaningful signs of healing.

The fact sheet includes information about professional support, recovery and where someone in the UK can begin asking for help.
