EATING DISORDERS - A GUIDE FOR FAMILY & LOVED ONES
Eating disorders can change the atmosphere of an entire household. Meals become stressful, food rules multiply, exercise or body checking may become rigid, and loved ones can find themselves constantly watching for signs that the person is becoming less safe.
This detailed Space to Breathe Therapy guide explains eating disorders without reducing them to weight, appearance or 'just eating'. It introduces anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, OSFED and ARFID, while making clear that individual assessment is essential.
Families are helped to understand what food, body image, binge eating, restriction, purging, exercise and recovery can feel like from the inside. There is practical guidance on raising concerns, supporting meals, avoiding unhelpful body and diet comments, responding to reassurance seeking and recognising when medical or urgent mental-health support is needed.
Treatment sections cover specialist assessment, psychological treatment, family involvement, medical monitoring, medication, recovery and relapse warning signs. ARFID is clearly distinguished from weight-and-shape-driven eating disorders and is signposted to its own dedicated family guide.
A substantial section is devoted to the supporter: meal conflict, support versus collusion, boundaries, partners and intimacy, siblings and children, the supporter's own relationship with food and body, and carer burnout.
Seven practical coaching tools include a person-versus-disorder map, meal-support agreement, warning-sign tracker, reassurance boundary, recovery-evidence tracker, supporter wellbeing plan and identity-rebuilding exercise.
The guide closes with specialist books, UK resources, clinical notes and a personal message from Maggie about continuing to see the person behind the eating disorder while also protecting the wellbeing of the family.
