Support & Safety
Anorexia nervosa is a serious eating disorder that can affect both physical and psychological health. People deserve timely, compassionate assessment and treatment.
Medical assessment
A GP or eating disorder service can assess medical risks and help arrange appropriate monitoring and treatment.
Specialist treatment
Evidence-based psychological treatment, nutritional rehabilitation and medical monitoring may be needed. Care should be individualised.
Supportive relationships
Trusted people can offer emotional and practical support without judgement or body-focused comments.
Anorexia can cause serious medical complications, even when someone does not appear visibly underweight. Seek urgent medical advice for fainting, chest pain, marked weakness, dehydration, confusion or other concerning symptoms. Call 999 for collapse, severe chest pain or serious breathing difficulties.
Important recovery information
For someone who is significantly malnourished, changes to nutritional intake may require medical supervision because of refeeding risks. Do not use this workbook to create an unsupervised treatment or meal plan.
