Support & Safety
Orthorexia is a term commonly used for an unhealthy preoccupation with eating in a way perceived as healthy, pure or correct. It is not currently a standalone diagnosis in major diagnostic manuals, but the distress and impairment can be serious.
Recognising when support may help
Food rules may begin to affect relationships, social activities, emotional wellbeing or nutritional adequacy.
Speak to your GP
A GP can assess physical and psychological concerns and help with referral to appropriate eating disorder services.
Professional support
Psychological treatment and individualised dietetic support may help address rigidity, anxiety, perfectionism and nutritional concerns.
Medical needs and allergies
Recovery from rigid rules does not mean ignoring medically necessary dietary restrictions or diagnosed allergies. Any changes should be guided by appropriate professionals.
