Support & Safety
Pica involves repeatedly eating non-food substances. It can occur for different reasons, including nutritional deficiencies, developmental differences and sensory or psychological factors.
Medical assessment matters
Some substances can cause poisoning, choking, intestinal obstruction, infection or other serious complications. A GP can help arrange appropriate medical assessment.
Sensory and communication needs
For some people, sensory experiences or communication difficulties may be important. Support should be individualised and respectful.
Environmental safety
Work with appropriate professionals to reduce access to hazardous substances while developing supportive strategies. Avoid punishment or shame.
If someone has swallowed a potentially poisonous substance, a sharp object, a battery or a magnet, seek urgent medical advice immediately. Do not induce vomiting. Call 999 for choking, breathing difficulties, collapse or severe symptoms. For other suspected poisoning, contact NHS 111 or urgent medical services promptly.
UK information and support
Your GP can assess medical concerns and help identify appropriate specialist services. NHS 111 can advise when urgent medical assessment is needed.
