Support & Safety
Purging disorder involves recurrent purging behaviours intended to influence weight or shape without the objectively large binge-eating episodes characteristic of bulimia nervosa. It is commonly classified within other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFED).
Medical assessment matters
Purging can cause dehydration, electrolyte disturbances, dental damage, digestive problems and potentially dangerous heart rhythm changes.
Speak to your GP
A GP can assess physical health, discuss concerns and help with referral to specialist eating disorder services.
Professional treatment
Individualised psychological treatment and medical monitoring can support recovery. A specialist team can also address nutrition, body image distress and emotional difficulties.
Supportive relationships
Trusted people can help reduce isolation by listening without judgement and encouraging access to appropriate care.
Important: Seek urgent medical advice for fainting, palpitations, marked weakness, dehydration or other concerning symptoms. Call 999 for collapse, severe chest pain, serious breathing difficulties or vomiting blood.
