Need Treatment for an Eating Disorder? Your First Step: The GP Appointment

I created this guide for the point at which somebody knows that food, eating, exercise or eating-disorder thoughts are becoming difficult, but they are not sure what to do next.

For most people in the UK, the first step towards eating-disorder treatment is an appointment with their GP. That first conversation can feel frightening. You do not need to diagnose yourself before asking for help, and you do not need to look a particular way.

The guide takes you through booking the appointment, deciding whether to take somebody with you, writing down symptoms beforehand, what to tell the GP, what questions may be asked, and what referral to a specialist eating-disorder service may look like.

I have included practical wording you can use if you freeze or do not know how to begin, plus guidance on what to do if you feel dismissed or are not referred. Beat advises that you can ask to see a different GP, and their First Steps leaflet is designed to take to an initial appointment.

There is information about specialist assessment, waiting for treatment, urgent warning signs and a printable GP Appointment Preparation Page where you can record symptoms, physical concerns, questions and what you are asking for.

I signpost to Beat's First Steps leaflet and HelpFinder, NHS eating-disorder information, NICE guidance and my own Space to Breathe Therapy at www.spacetobreathetherapy.co.uk for further eating-disorder, ARFID and recovery resources.

My message to you is that the appointment is not a test you have to pass. Tell the GP what the difficult days really look like. Take notes. Take somebody you trust. If the first conversation does not give you the help you need, keep asking.

Warmly, Maggie
