Supporting Someone with ARFID

PARENT’S GUIDE TO ARFID
Understand • Support • Advocate

ARFID can be confusing and frightening for families, particularly when people around you describe it as fussy eating or assume a child will simply eat when they become hungry enough.

This Parent’s Guide to ARFID has been created to help parents and carers understand what may be happening beneath the surface and support their child without turning every meal into a battle.

The guide explores sensory-based restriction, fear of choking or vomiting, low interest in food, neurodivergence, anxiety, safe foods, kinder mealtimes, gradual food exploration, school support, nutrition, assessment and medical warning signs.

It also includes practical language to use at home, a parent tracker, questions to take to appointments, advocacy guidance and further sources of support.

Most importantly, the resource recognises that ARFID is not bad behaviour, stubbornness or a parenting failure. A child can desperately want eating to be easier while still experiencing very real barriers to eating.

Small steps count. Safe foods matter. Understanding comes before pressure.
