Supporting Someone with UFED

Compassion • Support • Recovery

UFED stands for Unspecified Feeding or Eating Disorder. The word “unspecified” can make people assume the problem is less serious, but that is not what the diagnosis means.

Someone with UFED can be experiencing significant eating-disorder symptoms, physical risk and emotional distress even when their presentation is not described using another specific diagnosis.

This Support Hub guide has been written for partners, parents, family members, friends and carers who want to understand how to help without judging, comparing diagnoses or turning recovery into constant monitoring.

Inside the guide:
• what UFED means
• why somebody may receive the diagnosis
• signs and changes supporters may notice
• helpful and unhelpful language
• practical meal and day-to-day support
• shame, secrecy and anxiety
• depression, trauma, grief and neurodivergence
• treatment and questions for appointments
• medical warning signs
• supporter wellbeing
• further reading and UK support

The diagnosis may be unspecified. The person’s need for understanding is not.
