When Dieting Becomes Harmful

Dieting can begin with an understandable wish to change weight, health or appearance. Sometimes, however, the rules gradually become more important than wellbeing.

This Space to Breathe Therapy guide explores the point at which dieting may be becoming harmful. It looks beyond body size and focuses on what is happening physically, emotionally and in everyday life.

The guide covers warning signs such as increasing restriction, food fear, guilt after eating, compulsive exercise, body checking, binge-restrict cycles, avoiding social meals and feeling that self-worth depends on food or weight.

It explains how inadequate nourishment can affect energy, concentration, mood, digestion, hormones, physical health and preoccupation with food. There are also sections on diet culture, body image, weight stigma and the influence of social media.

Importantly, the guide considers people whose needs can be overlooked by standard dieting advice, including those with ARFID, autism, ADHD, sensory differences, anxiety or OCD, people using weight-loss medication, and children and teenagers.

There is practical guidance on stepping away from harmful dieting, loosening rigid rules, reducing body checking, rebuilding regular nourishment and widening life beyond food and body concerns. A section for family and friends explains what can be helpful and what may unintentionally make things harder.

The guide finishes with a detailed personal check-in, signs that urgent medical help may be needed, routes to professional support, recommended reading and a supportive message from Space to Breathe Therapy.

You do not need to look a particular way, reach a particular weight or become 'sick enough' before your relationship with food deserves care and support.
