How Light, Noise, Smell and Social Expectations Influence Eating - Part 1 of
Sometimes the difficulty is not the food
When someone struggles to eat, attention usually turns immediately to what is on the plate. We may ask whether they like the taste, whether the texture is acceptable or whether the meal is nutritious enough.
But eating never happens in isolation.
The brightness of the room, conversations nearby, music, clattering cutlery, unfamiliar smells, movement, temperature, seating and the expectation to socialise can all influence whether a person feels able to eat.
For an autistic person, someone with ADHD, an individual with ARFID or anyone who processes sensory information differently, the environment may be just as important as the food itself.
This article invites us to move away from asking, **“Why won’t they eat?”** and towards a more compassionate question:
**“What is happening around them that might be making eating difficult?”**
That small change can transform the way we understand and support children, teenagers and adults.
### Why safety matters at mealtimes
Eating requires the nervous system to feel safe enough to relax. When the environment feels predictable and manageable, the body is more able to notice hunger, support digestion and engage with food.
When sensory input becomes overwhelming, the brain may shift its attention away from eating and towards monitoring everything happening around it.
A loud conversation, flickering light, strong cleaning-product smell or uncomfortable chair may appear unimportant to someone else. For a person whose nervous system is already working hard, several of these sensations together can make eating feel exhausting or impossible.
This does not mean the person is being difficult. Their nervous system may be prioritising protection before appetite.

The article includes everyday examples that may feel very familiar: a child who eats breakfast at home but little at school, an adult who enjoys cooking but avoids restaurants, or someone who needs the same seat at the table because predictability helps them feel safe.
These experiences are often described as fussiness, avoidance or poor behaviour. Understanding sensory processing offers a different and much kinder explanation.
A personal message from me
As someone who is autistic and has ADHD, I have always known that ,where I eat can be just as important as what I eat.
There are places where I can enjoy a meal without thinking about the environment. In others, my nervous system is working so hard to process music, voices, lighting, smells and movement that eating becomes almost impossible.
For years, I believed that meant I was simply being difficult.
I wondered why I could not ignore background music when everyone else appeared able to. I could not understand why certain cafés left me exhausted before I had even opened the menu, or why several food smells mixed together could remove my appetite instantly.
Learning about sensory processing changed the way I understood myself. There was nothing wrong with me. My nervous system was taking in far more information than I realised.
I now hear similar experiences from many of the people I support. Parents may tell me their child eats well at home but refuses food at a family gathering. Adults describe leaving restaurants feeling overwhelmed rather than relaxed. Teenagers may eat very little in a noisy school dining hall and then feel extremely hungry once they return home.
When we recognise the role of the environment, these experiences begin to make sense.
Light, noise, smell and physical comfort
Lighting can change the entire eating experience. Harsh fluorescent lights may feel painful or distracting, while dim lighting can make food difficult to identify. Softer, natural or adjustable lighting may help the nervous system feel calmer.
Noise can be equally powerful. Restaurants and dining halls contain competing conversations, music, chairs scraping, plates stacking, coffee machines and kitchen equipment. If the brain cannot easily filter those sounds, eating must compete with all of them.
Smell is closely linked with emotion and memory. A familiar aroma may feel comforting, but several strong or unexpected smells can quickly suppress appetite or create nausea.
Physical comfort also matters. Temperature, posture, seating, table height, clothing and even the feel of a napkin can add to the overall sensory load.
No single adjustment will suit everybody. The purpose is not to create a “perfect” eating environment, but to become curious about what helps each person feel safer.

Before you download
If someone can eat in one place but struggles in another, that does not mean the difficulty is invented or inconsistent. It may show us that one environment feels safer and requires less effort from their nervous system.
Instead of increasing pressure, we can reduce sensory demands. Instead of insisting that someone just gets on with it,we can listen to what their experience is telling us.
Sometimes a quieter table, softer light, familiar seat or permission not to talk while eating can make a much greater difference than changing the food.
I hope this article helps you look beyond the plate and see the whole person, their nervous system and the environment surrounding them.
