A GENTLE REMINDER

Treat Yourself with Kindness

Sometimes the person we speak to most harshly is ourselves.

If your inner voice has been telling you that you are not doing enough, that you should be coping better, or that you have somehow got things wrong, I want you to pause for a moment. You are human. You are learning, growing and doing the best you can with what you are carrying today.

Self-criticism can feel convincing, but that does not make everything it says true. You do not need to punish yourself into becoming a better person. Kindness is not weakness, an excuse or something you must earn. It is often what helps us feel safe enough to keep going.

Try speaking to yourself as you would speak to somebody you genuinely care about. Replace “I should be doing better” with “I am doing what I can.” Replace “I have failed” with “I am learning.” Replace “I am not enough” with “I am allowed to be a work in progress.”

You will not always get everything right. None of us do. There may be difficult days, mistakes and moments when that critical voice returns. When it does, gently notice it without automatically believing it. Take a breath and choose a kinder response.

Pop this on your fridge as a daily reminder to treat yourself with kindness. Let it remind you that you deserve the same patience, compassion and understanding that you so freely offer to other people.

You do not have to be perfect to be worthy of care. You are already enough, exactly as you are today.
