WHEN YOUR GUT AFFECTS YOUR MOOD
Our digestive system and brain communicate constantly. That is why anxiety can sometimes be felt in the stomach — and why persistent digestive symptoms can affect mood, confidence, sleep and everyday life.
This Space to Breathe Therapy resource explores the gut–brain connection without reducing physical symptoms to “just stress”. It looks at how the nervous system can influence digestion, how digestive discomfort can affect emotional wellbeing, and why food restriction is not always the answer.
The resource includes a gentle check-in, practical ways of supporting both gut and nervous system, considerations for neurodivergent people and those with ARFID or restricted eating, and guidance on when digestive symptoms should be discussed with a GP.
The aim is understanding rather than blame: listening to what is happening in both body and mind while keeping eating as safe, manageable and adequately nourishing as possible.
