The Compassionate Mind

The Compassionate Mind

By Professor Paul Gilbert

I chose this book because shame and self-criticism can have a powerful effect on mental health.

Professor Paul Gilbert explains why compassion can feel difficult, particularly when someone has experienced criticism, rejection, trauma or emotional insecurity. The book also introduces exercises designed to help develop a calmer and more compassionate inner voice.

Take your time with the exercises. Compassion can feel unfamiliar at first, and it is something we gradually practise rather than something we are expected to master immediately.

Books can help us feel understood, introduce us to new ways of thinking and sometimes give us the words for experiences we have never been able to explain.

I have carefully chosen these books because each one offers something meaningful. Some provide practical strategies, while others share personal experiences that may help you feel less alone.

You do not need to read a book from beginning to end or complete it quickly. Take your time, pause whenever you need to and keep only the ideas that feel helpful to you.

Warmly,

Maggie
