Unmasking Autism
By Dr Devon Price
I recommend this book to people who have spent years hiding, adapting or changing themselves to feel accepted.
It explores autistic masking and the emotional cost of constantly trying to appear ‘fine’. I particularly value the way it encourages autistic people to understand themselves with greater kindness rather than seeing their differences as something that needs to be corrected.
This may be especially meaningful if you were diagnosed later in life, are questioning whether you could be autistic or are beginning to recognise how much energy you have spent trying to fit in.
Books can help us feel understood, introduce us to new ways of thinking and sometimes give us the words for experiences we have never been able to explain.
I have carefully chosen these books because each one offers something meaningful. Some provide practical strategies, while others share personal experiences that may help you feel less alone.
You do not need to read a book from beginning to end or complete it quickly. Take your time, pause whenever you need to and keep only the ideas that feel helpful to you.
Warmly,
Maggie
