Lao Tzu is the traditional name associated with the ancient Chinese text Tao Te Ching and the beginnings of Daoism. This saying is often credited to him, though its earliest known appearance is in a 1988 novel by Dean Koontz, who attributed it to Lao Tzu.
I like the thought that being loved can help us feel secure, while loving someone can ask us to be brave and open. Both matter, and neither should mean losing yourself.
