How We Can Support Men Better

Breaking the Silence: Men’s Mental Health – Resource 5

When we talk about men’s mental health, we often ask why men do not seek help. An equally important question is how we can create environments in which help feels safe to approach.

This resource considers the role of families, friendships, workplaces and communities. Support begins before crisis, in the way everyday feelings and conversations are received.

It explores the value of noticing changes without making assumptions. Withdrawal, irritability, overworking or reduced contact may be signs that somebody is carrying more than they are saying.

Helpful support is not interrogation or taking over. It can mean asking twice, listening without judgement, checking in again and offering clear information about practical and professional options.

I have written this for anyone who wants to support a man in their life while respecting his dignity, choices and pace.

The resource also reminds organisations that wellbeing cannot rest entirely on individuals. Predictable support, psychologically safe leadership and realistic workloads make disclosure less risky.

We break silence by showing that difficult feelings will be met with steadiness rather than shame. Care becomes meaningful when it is consistent, respectful and genuine.
