MY COMMITMENT TO STAYING SAFE
When suicidal thoughts become intense, the mind can narrow around pain and make it difficult to remember choices, people or reasons to wait. This resource offers a compassionate commitment to pause, connect and accept support while the strongest part of the crisis passes.
I have deliberately created this as a collaborative staying-safe plan rather than a “no-suicide contract”. Signing a promise cannot guarantee safety, and nobody should feel they have failed because distress has increased. The purpose is to identify practical actions and make it easier to tell somebody when more help is needed.
The sheet includes space for changes that can make the environment safer, small achievable steps, coping skills, believable words of encouragement and parts of life worth holding on to. These do not need to sound perfectly positive. A person, animal, value, responsibility, place or possibility can be enough to help you pause and connect.
Complete it with a therapist, GP, crisis worker or trusted person where possible. It should sit alongside a fuller safety plan and professional care. If you have seriously harmed yourself, may be about to act or cannot keep yourself safe, call 999 or go to A&E. For urgent mental health help call NHS 111. Samaritans: 116 123. Text SHOUT to 85258.
With warmth,
Maggie
