REALITY AND EXPECTATIONS

Expectations shape how we interpret our lives. They may come from personal hopes, family rules, social comparison, perfectionism, past experiences or ideas about where we believe we should be. When reality is very different, disappointment and self-criticism can become intense.

This one-page reflection sheet places current reality and expectations side by side. It then asks three compassionate questions: What can I influence? What may need flexibility or grief? What is a balanced next step from where I am today?

The purpose is not simply to lower expectations. Some realities need practical change, fairer conditions, additional support, boundaries or advocacy. Other expectations may no longer fit our health, energy, circumstances or values. Some losses need to be acknowledged before a new direction becomes possible.

Use this resource when you feel stuck between how things are and how you believe they should be. It can support therapy, coaching, workplace reflection or personal journalling. Aim for a response that is honest enough to believe and kind enough to help.

With warmth,
