Relationship Breakdown Can Be More Than Heartbreak

When a relationship ends, we often describe it as heartbreak, but the loss can reach into almost every part of somebody’s life.

You may not only be losing a partner. Your home might change. Your everyday routines may disappear. Friendships and family relationships can shift. There may be financial worries, changes in contact with children, and suddenly the future you thought you were building looks completely different.

For some men, this can also bring a real loss of identity and purpose.

You might experience anger, rejection, loneliness or grief. You may find yourself wondering where you belong now or struggling to imagine what life will look like next.

And I think it is important to recognise this for what it is:

A relationship ending is a loss, and you are allowed to grieve it.

There can sometimes be pressure to “move on,” start dating again, keep busy or prove that you're okay. But adjustment doesn't work to somebody else's timetable.

You can miss somebody while knowing the relationship needed to end.

You can feel angry and still be grieving.

You can know things will eventually change and still find today incredibly difficult.

You don't have to minimise what you've lost simply because other people think you should be over it.

Give yourself time to adjust not only to the loss of the relationship, but to all the other changes that may have come with it.

And if it feels too much to carry by yourself, allowing somebody to support you through that change is not a failure to cope.

You don't have to rush into your new life. Sometimes you need time to grieve the old one first.
