SCHOOL MORNINGS, SCHOOL REFUSAL AND GETTING THROUGH THE DOOR
A practical ADHD guide for calmer school mornings, attendance and difficult transitions.
When getting through the school door feels impossible, families need understanding and a workable next step. This 30-page guide helps parents and carers explore what may be making school mornings difficult for a child with ADHD, reduce avoidable pressure at home, and work with school on support that protects wellbeing and access to learning.
Inside, you’ll find clear explanations of ADHD and morning demands; ways to notice patterns without blame; practical ideas for time, transitions, sleep, sensory needs and getting ready; approaches for responding to anxiety, shutdowns and high distress; and guidance for speaking with school, planning adjustments and reviewing what helps. It also includes meeting prompts, a two-week support plan, a morning snapshot worksheet, key terms and further reading.
The guide is designed to be dipped into one page at a time. Choose the parts that fit your family, discuss changes with your child, and share relevant observations with the school adults who support them. There is no single routine that works for every child; the aim is to understand the barrier and make the next safe step more manageable.
For parents and carers of children and young people with ADHD, suspected ADHD or overlapping support needs. The guide is educational information and does not replace individual medical, clinical, legal or safeguarding advice. Attendance guidance and services differ across the UK; England-specific guidance is identified in the booklet.
