A TRIP TO THE SHOPS, MY WAY: A FRIENDLY, FLEXIBLE GUIDE
Shops can bring bright lights, sounds, smells, people, queues and lots of choices. This child-friendly guide helps autistic children and their grown-ups plan a shop visit that respects the child’s comfort, communication, sensory needs and choices.
The eight-page illustrated guide includes a simple plan, preparation ideas, staying together and understanding what happens next, sensory supports, ways to take part or ask for help, a pause and leaving plan, and a gentle reflection page. Children can write, draw, point, use pictures or AAC, talk with an adult, or skip any activity.
The visit can be short, the list can change, and leaving early can be the right choice. The grown-up remains responsible for safety, payment and any questions for shop staff.
Download the printable PDF and adapt it to the child and the outing.
