ADHD, FOOD, EATING AND MEALTIMES

Eating difficulties around ADHD are often described too simply.

A child may forget to eat while hyperfocused, notice hunger only when it becomes urgent, struggle with the sensory experience of food, find sitting at a table difficult, seek food for stimulation, or experience appetite changes around medication.

This standalone parent resource looks beyond 'fussy eating' and mealtime behaviour.

It explores executive functioning, interoception, task switching, sensory differences, safe foods, food seeking, medication and appetite, environmental stress at the table, school lunches and the importance of reducing unnecessary pressure.

It also recognises that ADHD is not the only possible explanation. Autism, ARFID, anxiety, physical health conditions, allergies or intolerances, gastrointestinal difficulties and other feeding or eating concerns may need to be considered.

Parents are given practical strategies for transitions into meals, sensory-friendly adjustments, introducing change without tricking the child, maintaining safe foods and using language that keeps trust intact.

The downloadable guide includes a Food and Mealtime Support Map to help families notice appetite patterns, sensory barriers, medication effects, school difficulties, reliable foods and the environmental factors that make eating easier or harder.

There is also clear guidance on when restricted eating, growth or nutritional concerns, physical symptoms or severe anxiety need professional assessment.

The goal is not the perfect plate.

It is helping a child access enough food, feel safer around eating and build a relationship with food that is supported rather than driven by shame or repeated battles.
