ADHD PERFECTIONISM — MOMENTS THAT CAN INTENSIFY IT

Perfectionism is not a diagnostic symptom of ADHD, but some people with ADHD find themselves caught between executive-function difficulties and extremely high standards.

This full Space to Breathe Therapy guide explores six moments that can intensify perfectionistic patterns: fear of criticism, an open-ended task, comparing with others, replaying past mistakes, having no clear “good enough” point and working on something with high personal importance.

Inside, the guide looks at the perfectionism loop — high standards, uncertainty, overthinking, delay or overworking, exhaustion and self-criticism — and shows practical ways to create a clear finish line without abandoning quality. It includes support for partners and families, workplace and education considerations, a detailed Perfectionism & Good Enough Map, a tailored message from Maggie, books and professional information.

The central idea is not to lower every standard. It is to recognise when care and quality have done their job and further effort is being driven by fear rather than usefulness.

NICE guidance recognises that ADHD can affect organisation, time management and motivation, and recommends individualised environmental modifications and structured psychological support where appropriate. Perfectionism itself, however, is not an ADHD diagnostic criterion.
