ADHD SHUTDOWN — MOMENTS THAT CAN INTENSIFY IT

Sometimes a person reaches a point where there simply does not seem to be enough capacity left for another conversation, decision, demand or piece of sensory input.

This Space to Breathe Therapy guide uses “ADHD shutdown” as a descriptive lived-experience term rather than a formal diagnosis. It explores six situations that may contribute to a shutdown-like state: demand exceeding capacity, conflict that feels inescapable, too much sensory input, decisions continuing to arrive, emotions being held in, and having no safe way to pause.

Inside the full guide are practical lower-demand responses, signs someone may have much less usable capacity, guidance for family and supporters, workplace and education considerations, a detailed personal Shutdown Map, a message from Maggie, book recommendations and professional sources.

The emphasis is not on forcing someone back into productivity. It is on noticing the load, reducing what can be reduced and allowing recovery before expecting explanation or problem-solving.

This resource is psychoeducational and is not a diagnostic checklist or a substitute for individual medical or mental-health advice.
