Autism Across Life

Recognition can happen at any age.

Autism is lifelong and begins in early development. It may be recognised or diagnosed during childhood, adolescence or adulthood. The age of recognition does not tell us when autism began or how much support someone needs.

Where would you like to begin?

Choose a reflection prompt. You can skip anything that does not fit.

There is no single life story of autism.

Understanding at your pace

You do not have to make sense of everything today.

Lifelong does not mean unchanging

Skills, coping strategies, interests, environments and demands can change. Support needs can also vary across situations and over time. Looking capable in one setting does not show the effort or help required elsewhere.

Some people’s differences were missed earlier or became more noticeable when demands increased. Others were recognised in childhood. Neither experience is more valid than the other.

This reflection cannot establish a diagnosis. If you want to discuss an assessment, a GP can help you understand the local route. New or worsening health difficulties should also be considered in their own right, rather than automatically attributed to autism.
