AUTISM MUM SUPPORT - SUPPORTING SIBLINGS

When one child needs a great deal of support, brothers and sisters can sometimes become the quieter members of the family. They may love their autistic sibling deeply while also feeling frustrated, worried, jealous, embarrassed or tired.

Supporting Siblings looks at how mums can hold different needs within the same family without expecting every child to need the same thing. It explores fairness versus equality, the sibling who becomes “the easy one,” mixed feelings, protecting siblings from becoming carers, changed plans, meltdowns, one-to-one connection and how to talk about autism without making the autistic child the problem.

The downloadable resource includes a sibling-needs table, a practical sibling check-in, ideas for managing competing needs, UK support starting points and a personal message from Maggie.

The goal is not a perfectly balanced family. It is a family in which each person can be seen, listened to and supported as an individual.
