Autism Mum Support

When nobody else seems to understand your child

For the mum who keeps explaining, advocating and trying to help others see the child she knows. Move through these reflections at your own pace. There is no right answer, and you can leave anything blank.

1. A place to be heard

You do not have to prove your child's needs here.

Being repeatedly questioned or misunderstood can be exhausting. This space is for your experience as well as your child's.

2. The child I know

Other people may see one moment. You see the wider picture: the build-up, effort, joy, strengths, and recovery.

A behaviour may be communication, a stress response or an attempt to cope. Understanding what happens before and after it can help reveal unmet needs.

3. The weight of explaining

Choose the pressures you recognise. You can add your own.

4. Helping others understand

Use this page to prepare a clear message for a school, family member or professional.

Useful wording: “I would like us to look beyond the behaviour and consider what my child is communicating. Here is what I have noticed, and this is the support I am asking us to try.”

5. Looking after me, too

Your needs matter alongside your child's. Caring for yourself does not mean caring less for them.

6. My next gentle step

A small, realistic step is enough. You do not have to solve every barrier today.

You know your child in ways a form, meeting or brief observation cannot capture. Your insight deserves to be heard and considered.
