BOX BREATHING FOR ANXIETY

Box breathing is a simple paced-breathing exercise built around four parts: breathing in, pausing, breathing out and pausing again.

This interactive resource moves beyond simply telling someone to “take a deep breath”. It helps people experiment with the pace, shorten the count, remove the breath holds and combine breathing with grounding so the exercise can be adapted rather than forced.

Inside the downloadable workbook:
• a clear introduction to the four-part breathing pattern
• a large box-tracing activity
• 2-, 3- and 4-count experiments
• a version without counting
• alternatives for when panic makes breath-focused exercises difficult
• a personal breathing plan
• an after-exercise check-in

The traditional four-count pattern will not feel comfortable for everyone. The workbook repeatedly gives permission to change or stop the exercise. Someone who becomes dizzy, light-headed, more panicky or physically uncomfortable should return to ordinary breathing and choose another grounding strategy.

Breathing techniques can be useful coping tools, but concerning physical symptoms should not automatically be attributed to anxiety.
