Breaking Tasks Down with ADHD

Find a starting point that works for you.

Tasks with several steps can feel overwhelming with ADHD, especially when it is unclear where to begin. Making the actions visible can reduce the amount you need to hold in mind. Different approaches work for different people.

Where are you getting stuck?

Build a manageable sequence

You do not have to plan every detail before starting.

Turn a broad task into actions

“Sort the paperwork” may hide many decisions. A clearer first step could be “put the unopened letters in one pile”. The next action might be “open one letter” or “ask someone to help identify what needs a reply”.

A useful step is specific enough that you know what to do. Its size should match your capacity, circumstances and the task. You can pause, change the order or seek practical help.

Difficulty beginning does not tell us how capable or motivated someone is. Clear instructions, accessible tools, fewer competing demands and individual support can matter alongside a checklist.
