Circles of burnout
Circles of burnout is a reflective coaching resource designed to help people separate what they can act on, what they may be able to influence, and what sits outside their direct control. This can reduce mental overload and support a clearer next step.
Circle of control
· Resting without apology
· Meeting basic needs
· One task at a time
Circle of influence
· Workload conversations
· Reducing optional demands
· Planning recovery time
Circle of concerns
· Past overwork
· Organisational culture
· How quickly energy returns
Coaching tips
· Begin with the smallest item inside the circle of control.
· Use the influence circle for requests, conversations and planning—not guarantees.
· Acknowledge concerns without spending all available energy trying to control them.
· Move an item between circles if new information changes what is possible.
· Return to basic needs and professional support when overwhelm remains high.
Reflection questions
What am I trying to control that is not mine to control? What is one action available to me today? Who or what could increase my influence safely?
Important note
This resource supports reflection and coaching. It does not mean difficult circumstances should simply be accepted, and it does not replace safeguarding, advocacy, medical care or crisis support where these are needed.
Until next time, give yourself space to breathe.
With love, Maggie
