DIFFERENT COMMUNICATION STYLES
Understanding how we communicate, think and express ourselves differently.
People can love and care for one another while communicating in completely different ways. One person may be direct while another communicates more indirectly. One may need to talk immediately while another needs time to process. Some people need emotional reassurance; others instinctively show care by finding practical solutions.
This Relationship Issues resource explores verbal and non-verbal communication, direct and indirect styles, emotional and practical responses, processing differences and the ways autism and ADHD can influence communication within relationships.
The downloadable guide includes a communication-style check-in, questions couples can use instead of making assumptions, information about recurring conflict cycles, recommended reading and guidance about when additional support may be helpful.
The aim is not to decide which communication style is best. It is to help people become curious about how both people communicate so that difference does not automatically become misunderstanding.
