EATING OUT, MY WAY: A FRIENDLY, FLEXIBLE GUIDE
Eating out can bring new places, smells, sounds, menus and waiting. This child-friendly guide helps autistic children and their grown-ups plan a cafe or restaurant visit that respects the child's comfort, communication and food preferences.
The eight-page illustrated guide includes preparation and a visit plan, choosing a comfortable seat, planning around food and sensory needs, ways to order or ask for help, a break and leaving plan, and a gentle reflection page. Children can write, draw, point, use pictures or AAC, talk with an adult, or skip any activity.
There is no pressure to taste, finish or eat a particular food. Adults can plan for allergies, intolerances and venue rules, and check ahead about familiar food or other support. A short visit or leaving early can be the right choice.
