Losing everyday items
Losing everyday items can be a real and distressing part of some people’s ADHD or neurodivergent experience. It is not a personal failing, and it may become more intense when executive demands, emotion, sensory input, tiredness or accumulated stress exceed available capacity.
Moments that may trigger or intensify it
· Putting something down while distracted
· Objects have no fixed home
· Leaving in a rush
· Carrying too many things
· Changing bags or rooms
· Tidying items out of sight
What may help
· Name what is happening without judgement.
· Reduce noise, demands or decisions where possible.
· Use an external support: written steps, timer, reminder, body double or safe person.
· Allow recovery before expecting problem-solving or productivity.
· Review patterns later and plan one practical adjustment.
Important note
This resource offers recognition and coaching ideas; it is not a diagnostic checklist. Experiences vary and similar difficulties can have other causes. Seek professional support when symptoms are severe, worsening, unsafe or significantly affecting daily life.
Until next time, give yourself space to breathe.
With love, Maggie
