MANAGING BIG EMOTIONS AT HOME
ADHD Parent Support Series – Part 3

Big emotions can become one of the most exhausting parts of family life with ADHD. A small disappointment, a change of plan or an ordinary request can sometimes lead to a reaction that feels enormous.

This parent-support resource helps you look beyond the immediate behaviour and consider what may have been building underneath it — accumulated demands, sensory overload, tiredness, frustration, transitions, shame or simply the effort of coping throughout the day.

This is not about removing boundaries or accepting unsafe behaviour. It is about recognising when a child is too overwhelmed for reasoning, supporting regulation first, and returning to boundaries, responsibility and repair when their thinking brain is more available.

Inside, you will find practical ideas for recognising early warning signs, reducing escalation, communicating during intense moments, creating an individual regulation menu, repairing afterwards and building a simple family Big Emotion Plan.

There is also space for the parent's experience. Children are not the only people with nervous systems, and difficult moments can overwhelm everyone in the room.

The aim is not a family that never experiences big feelings. It is a family that gradually becomes better able to understand them, respond safely and reconnect afterwards.
