Masking burnout

MASKING BURNOUT
Moments that can intensify the experience

Masking means consciously or unconsciously suppressing natural responses or compensating in order to meet social expectations. Sustained effort can be exhausting.

This resource explores six situations that may make masking burnout harder:
1. Monitoring every response
2. Hiding movement or emotion
3. Long social or work days
4. No safe place to decompress
5. Trying to look organised
6. Being praised for coping

WHAT IS INSIDE THE FULL GUIDE
The PDF looks beyond the final visible difficulty and explores the load underneath. It includes practical ways to reduce demands, ideas for home, relationships, work and education, a dedicated reflection worksheet, a personal message from Maggie, book recommendations and professional context.

A PRACTICAL STARTING POINT
Create places where less performance is required. Build decompression into the day, reduce unnecessary social demands and allow movement, direct communication and visible support needs.

This is not about blaming yourself for finding something difficult. The aim is to notice patterns earlier, make information and time more visible, reduce unnecessary pressure and build recovery into everyday life.

The resource is psychoeducational and is not a diagnostic checklist. If difficulties are significantly affecting daily life, safety or wellbeing, professional support may be helpful.
