MY COMMUNICATION NEEDS
How to use the worksheet

Communication differences are not a lack of communication. You may communicate best in a particular way, need extra time to process what someone has said, or find it easier to respond when there is less pressure. This worksheet helps you identify what works for you and what you would like others to understand.

Begin with how you prefer people to communicate with you. You might prefer clear, direct language, one question at a time, written information, or a quiet setting. There is no need to choose one method for every situation. Your preferences may change depending on how you are feeling and what the conversation is about.

Think about whether you need extra processing time and what happens when you feel pressured to respond quickly. You might need a pause, a chance to come back to the conversation, or time to organise your thoughts. Note whether written instructions are easier than spoken ones, and which words, expressions, or communication styles can feel unclear or confusing.

The worksheet also asks how you communicate when overwhelmed. You may go quiet, need to leave, use fewer words, or find it easier to communicate in writing or with another format. Consider what could help in those moments and whether you need space, connection, or a clear choice between them.

Use the final prompts to describe how others can support communication and name one need you want to advocate for. You could ask people to use plain language, give you time to answer, share important information in writing, or check that you have understood without putting you on the spot. A short sentence is enough to begin explaining what helps.

Take the worksheet at your own pace. You can use keywords, draw, dictate, skip a prompt, or return later. Share your answers only with people you choose. Your communication needs are valid, and asking for a different format or more time is a reasonable way to make communication clearer for everyone.
