Supermarket visits can bring a lot of sights, sounds, smells, waiting and unexpected changes. This child-friendly guide helps autistic children and the adults who support them make a visit more predictable, comfortable and flexible.
The eight-page illustrated guide includes a simple preparation plan, a visit sequence, space to notice sensory preferences, child-led ways to take part, a pause and leaving plan, and a gentle reflection page for afterwards. Children can write, draw, point, use pictures or AAC, talk with an adult, or skip any activity.
The guide puts the child’s communication, comfort and choices first. A successful visit does not mean completing every shopping task or staying when the child needs to leave.
