OVERLOAD, MELTDOWN & SHUTDOWN
Understanding early signs and finding support
Space to Breathe Therapy

Overload is not a failure. Recognising early signs can help you reduce demands and find regulation sooner. This reflection worksheet offers a place to notice what overload feels like for you and identify support that may help before, during, or after a difficult moment.

WHAT THE WORKSHEET EXPLORES

The prompts guide you to identify your early signs of overload and what tends to build up beforehand. You can reflect on how overwhelm feels in your body, how other people might notice you are struggling, and what may make things harder in that moment.

The worksheet also asks what helps reduce demands or sensory input, what you need afterwards to recover, and what your earliest possible support step could be. Together, these questions can help you make a personal plan that reflects your own needs and circumstances.

HOW TO USE IT

Take one prompt at a time. You might notice changes in your senses, concentration, communication, energy, or body. Think about the small demands that can accumulate, as well as the practical changes or support from others that make a difference.

Your support step could be a pause, leaving a noisy space, reducing a task, using a familiar regulation strategy, or letting someone know what you need. Small steps count. You can complete the worksheet in stages and revisit it as you learn more about what helps.

There is no single right way to experience overload, meltdown, or shutdown. This worksheet is for reflection and planning, not diagnosis. Keep what feels useful and share your answers only if and when you choose.
