PARENT BURNOUT — WHEN SUPPORTING YOUR ADHD CHILD IS EXHAUSTING
This resource is for the parent.
Supporting a child with ADHD can involve far more than the tasks other people see. There can be school messages, appointments, forms, forgotten belongings, routines, emotional regulation, sleep difficulties, advocacy, sibling needs and the constant mental work of anticipating what might happen next.
Over time, a parent can become so used to functioning under pressure that exhaustion starts to feel normal.
Parent burnout is not evidence that you do not love your child.
You can be fiercely committed to your child and still dislike how family life feels when there is relentless conflict, noise, worry, interrupted sleep or responsibility.
This standalone resource looks at the invisible mental load, constant co-regulation, advocacy, judgement, relationship strain and the difficulty of getting genuine recovery when you remain mentally 'on duty'.
It talks openly about compassion fatigue, resentment, emotional flatness and the guilt parents can feel for simply wanting some space.
There is also a section for neurodivergent parents, recognising that the organisational, emotional and sensory demands of parenting may collide directly with the parent's own ADHD, autism or other needs.
The practical guidance is deliberately not another enormous self-care list.
Instead, it focuses on reducing decisions, externalising remembering, transferring ownership rather than merely delegating tasks, protecting genuine recovery and identifying what does not actually have to be carried today.
The downloadable PDF includes a detailed Parent Capacity Check-In with questions such as: What am I carrying? What can wait? What can somebody else own? What am I doing because I think I should? What support am I missing? What does my nervous system need?
Most importantly, this resource recognises that support for the parent is not secondary to support for the child.
A sustainable family system needs room for both.
