Passionate Interests and Autism

Make room for what matters to you.

Deep engagement with an interest can support detailed knowledge and skills for some autistic people. Interests can also offer enjoyment, comfort or connection. They do not need to become expertise, a qualification or paid work to be worthwhile.

Sharing is a choice

You might enjoy teaching, exchanging facts, making something or spending quiet time with someone who shares your interest. You can also keep it private. Ask how others would like to join in, and communicate how you would like your enthusiasm to be received.

If an interest is leaving little room for needs you want to meet, support can help you find a balance without dismissing its value. A pause can be easier when you know how and when you can return.

Individual experiences

Interests may be lifelong, changing, broad or very specific. There is no requirement to know everything about a subject. This reflection does not assess autism or expertise.
